Looking for advice and experiences with high school specialty centers?

My daughter just started 8th grade and we are already being pitched on specialty centers for high school. I understand the theory behind specialty centers (both academically and politically), but I’m curious how they play out in reality?

We are zoned for Godwin and my daughter is tempted by a couple of programs out in Henrico and Varina. Obviously these schools are on the other side of the county and will require a lot of travel, so I wanted to get a sense of whether people think they are worth it? Would love to hear experiences from both students and parents who have gone through this.
