Why didn't goku contact his family during his 7 years of death

Couldn't he just put his hand on king Kai's back and see how they are doing, and also didn't goku leave his family to train uub at the end of z or did he let uub leave with him and his family like we saw in a manga made by Akira toriyama I don't remember the managa but it was chapter 4
