Need Ideas to Help Friend

I have a friend with a child who has special needs that was earlier born this year. It sounds like they are going to have along road ahead of themselves with constant ins and outs with specialists and therapists, unfortunately. I saw them recently and it looked like they were getting worn out and it was something I wanted to try and help with.

He is in somewhat of a lower paying job that he hoped to upgrade prior to having kids, but it just never panned out. His wife is also unemployed and with things getting a bit worse with their child’s diagnosis, I think it would be hard to hold a job down from here.

My wife and I try to set aside some money for giving / generosity. We are not rich or anything, but we feel like our needs are met and can help to some extent. I have a feeling that they will be in massive medical debt due to the issues their child’s diagnosis faces, so paying medical costs seems insurmountable. But I am trying to figure out how maybe we could help outside of just paying a doctor bill.

I also do not necessarily want to just hand them cash because, unfortunately, his wife has been terrible with money and has been known to blow through whatever she has access to with going to the bar.

I am just looking for some ideas of what could be helpful - maybe even up to like $20k - if it was a good idea. I feel like some other friends may pitch in because we love the guy.

Thanks for the help!
