3-year-old cat hospitalized with kidney disease – looking for advice and insight

Refer to FAQ

Hi everyone,

My 3-year-old cat has just been hospitalized. She had been vomiting yellow liquid, stopped eating and became very lethargic. Tests showed both kidneys have significant fibrosis (like an elderly cat’s) and stones. Her creatinine and urea levels are very high. The vets say it’s not congenital but probably the result of some past trauma or injury.

Right now she’s on IV fluids, anti-nausea meds and pain relief, but she still hasn’t eaten. They’re running more tests to see if her levels improve. If she responds, she’ll come home on a renal diet and ongoing monitoring. If not, we’ll have to discuss quality of life.

I know r/AskVet can’t diagnose, but I’d appreciate any insight into: • What we might expect in the next few days (if values can improve quickly). • Tips to manage chronic kidney disease in a young cat at home (diet, hydration, affordable care). • Signs of improvement vs. signs that indicate she’s suffering.

We’re devastated and trying to do our best. Any advice or shared experiences would mean a lot. Thank you.
