Non-Technical Co-Founder Wanted – Build a Simple, High-Impact GIS SaaS Asset Management For Rural Municipalities - Rural Route GIS
Rural Route GIS – Asset Management Built for Rural Municipalities
I'm building Rural Route GIS, a lean, intuitive GIS/asset management SaaS designed specifically for rural municipalities (RMs) and counties. Unlike complex, expensive GIS solutions like ArcGIS, Rural Route GIS is practical, affordable, and built for real-world use, allowing municipalities to finally ditch paper maps, spreadsheets, and fragmented record-keeping.
The Opportunity
Rural municipalities manage tens of thousands of square kilometers and hundreds of miles of roads, yet most still rely on outdated, manual systems. Enterprise GIS solutions are expensive and overly complex, leaving small municipalities underserved. Rural Route GIS is simple, fast, and easy to implement, built to handle the realities of rural infrastructure management.
The Problem: Manual Tracking Chaos
When a culvert fails and floods a road, good luck finding the maintenance history. It could be in Jim's filing cabinet, Sarah's spreadsheet, or buried in a stack of work orders from years past. Staff spend hours just hunting down the paperwork. Critical data lives in multiple places—paper maps, Excel sheets, filing cabinets, and people's heads. When staff leaves, institutional knowledge walks out the door.
This scattered system causes:
- Missed maintenance windows
- Work being done twice because nobody knew it was already completed
- Delayed, uninformed decisions that impact road safety and municipal efficiency
How We Got Here
While working for a rural municipality managing 24,000+ km² of land and 400+ miles of road, I witnessed firsthand how inefficient and error-prone manual tracking was. Paper maps, spreadsheets, and scattered work orders made basic maintenance reporting a nightmare.
Seeing this problem, I began building Rural Route GIS in partnership with the municipality, creating a working prototype to test workflows and understand exactly what staff needed. The municipality has committed to being our launch customer and will provide referrals to other RMs in the province once operational.
Important Note: The prototype was purely for validation and learning. The MVP will be a complete recode with proper architecture, built from the ground up for scale and maintainability.
Key Features
- Digitally map roads, ditches, and other infrastructure by mile, quarter-section, or custom segments
- Track grading, graveling, ditch mowing, brush mulching, and more with visual progress indicators
- Monitor culverts, water flow, and drainage issues
- Manage roadside signage, including type, status, and maintenance needs
- Generate instant reports for supervisors and councils
Why It's Compelling
- Affordable: Entry-level RMs can subscribe for a low monthly cost, while enterprise solutions cost $1,500+/user/year
- Simple: No GIS expertise required; staff can create, update assets and track work quickly
- Scalable: Start with roads, signs, culverts and expand into or other municipal assets
- Pre-validated Demand: Launch customer committed, with proven workflows and feature requirements
About Me
I'm a self-taught full-stack developer who loves turning complex problems into simple, practical tools. My tech stack is lean and battle-tested: PHP, HTML, CSS, JS, MySQL, plus experience with Flutter and PWAs. I can handle everything from backend architecture to basic UI/UX—and I build fast.
While I can do the full-stack work solo, I know Rural Route GIS will succeed faster with someone who lives and breathes the customer-facing side. I'm most energized when I'm deep in code solving technical challenges. I need a partner who gets equally excited about user workflows, municipal relationships, and turning our validated concept into a thriving business.
I don't just code—I build businesses because I love seeing ideas come alive. But the best businesses are built by complementary teams, not solo developers.
The Ask
I'm handling all backend development, GIS functionality, and technical architecture. I'm looking for a business-focused co-founder (North America only) to own:
- UI/UX design and customer workflows
- Municipal outreach and marketing
- Customer onboarding and success
Equity split negotiable based on experience and commitment level. "Do not even think of messaging me about my budget or asking for financial compensation for your work this is equity only!"
Why Join
- Immediate, validated market need with committed launch customer
- High-impact project solving a real problem for rural governments
- Rapid development cycle (MVP achievable in few a weeks to a month)
- Opportunity to co-create a rural infrastructure management platform with provable adoption
Ready to turn rural infrastructure chaos into streamlined digital systems? Let's build this together.
