Visiting Lisbon next week - need advice on Intendente/Mouraria/Anjos
Olá! My husband and I are visiting Portugal for the first time next week and we will have ~5 days in Lisbon including surrounding areas like Sintra. When we travel we generally don't like to only see touristy things, we will be doing plenty of that but I had it on my list to visit Mouraria, Intendente, and/or the Anjos areas as well because I had read that there is a great food scene here as well as it being the multicultural district. Sounded right up our alley. Now as I'm planning this day of our trip I am seeing, of course, all of the negative opinions about these areas' struggles with crime, dr*gs, what have you. We don't mind an area that is a little rough around the edges and know how to use common sense to stay safe, but I'm seeing a lot of conflicting information about the state of these areas and whether it is still worth visiting (and where we should go, if yes) or if we should dedicate this day to spending more time elsewhere in the city. From what I'm reading it sounds like these neighborhoods experienced a surge in revitalization/gentrification in the 2010s and then perhaps things have started to worsen again after COVID? If there's still things worth seeing and doing, like if Largo do Intendente is still worth visiting for example, we're all for it. Just looking for some current information from people who have actually spent time in the area vs. people regurgitating fear-mongering things they heard. I really appreciate your input, I know the tourism surge is both a good and a harmful thing for Lisbon and we hope to see your city as respectfully as possible.
