How to turn down sex when your embodied consent (HL/LL) says no

Self Reflection

The purpose of Embodied Consent is to ensure that sex is freely chosen and mutually wanted. Sex is meant to feel good (before, during, and after) without also feeling bad. Consent is HOW to created the safety, trust, and clarity to make that good-without-bad sex possible. It allows each partner to express their true *desires and limits*, so intimacy is built on respect and shared enthusiasm rather than pressure or obligation or caretaking.

Anyone (man/woman/nonbinary) can feel:

  • vulnerable when initiating (because it risks rejection)
  • guilty or pressured when saying no (because they don't want to hurt their partner)
  • loved and secure when the "no" is clear, kind, and caring

So when you turn down sex, here's how to make sure your "no" lands as a boundary, not a withdrawal of love:

  • reassure connection
    • Make it clear the "no" is about you in that moment, not about them or your attraction to them.
    • "I love you and I find you attractive, I just don't feel like sex right now."
    • "well shit, now isn't a gonna work for me. But I loved the way you initiated. That was totally hot!"
  • counter offer connection in another form
    • softens the "no" by showing you do want closeness.
    • "I'm not in a place where I could enjoy sex right now, but I'm up for cuddling that doesn't lead to sex. You up for that?"
    • "I'm in the middle of something, but I'd be up for a walk in like 25 minutes if you want touch base and hang out."
  • share the parts that do and don't
    • it helps reassure the connection and squash negative assumptions
    • "Part of me would love to rip off your pants and cozy up with your dick. I wish I felt better, cuz that would otherwise be yummy. Sadly, my body needs recover time more than sex right now."
    • "Part of me is preoccupied with work stress and I wouldn't be able to be present the way I want to be."
  • acknowledge feelings if partner seems hurt
    • if they take it personally, notice and care without backtracking or fixing
    • "I can see this feels hard for you. I still care about us, even while saying no"
    • "I can tell you're a bit disappointed. I don't want you to doubt that I want you - it's just not a yes for me right now"

Is this something you've tried? How did it go?

What makes this tricky in your relationship? Is there something else that works better for you?

How important is it to you to have sex with your partner that feels good without also feeling bad?

I've included the check-in questions (HL, LL) for embodied consent (from the post pinned on my profile). Only consent to sex that you and your body want in the moment. Be clear that you expect the same from your partner. Have sex that feels good without also feeling bad:
