Can I wear gel before haircut appointment?

My barber always cuts my hair lower than I’d like on the top. Can I go to the barber with my hair styled with gel so that he gets the point to not touch the top or does he have to cut it his way so that it matches with the rest of the haircut? All I get is a low fade.
