AITA for how I reacted to a girl screaming inappropriately loud in an elevator?

Hi, my spouse & I are long time lurkers on this sub and we had the very rare instance of potentially being assholes today. Throwaway.

My spouse and I were visiting a mall in a capital city in the southern US today. It was extremely crowded and a very mixed bag as far as the population. Our 4mo baby is with us. He finally fell asleep after nearly two hours of window shopping as we waited to take the elevator upstairs in order to leave.

After we called the lift a group of one woman and two older teenage girls came up behind us. The elevator was uncommonly small and we had a stroller, but my spouse made sure there was room for the group of three to also take the same ride as us.

After they boarded, the two girls are talking and after a few seconds one of the girls began to laugh, starting low then ending in a full on fake style scream laugh, growing increasingly louder - not because something funny was sad, but seemingly to be intentionally antagonistic. I get sometimes teens act outrageously when they’re in public unattended, but considering there was a parent or at least an adult involved, I was appalled they felt this was appropriate behavior for an lift, let alone public space of any kind. Due to her ridiculous outburst, our baby startled and became extremely scared. I immediately said aloud “how rude can you get?” & purposely positioned myself in front of the elevator doors so I could ensure my baby, spouse, and I exited first. The adult with them appeared to take offense to this and said, “excuse me?!” so I turned to her directly and said, “That’s extremely rude behavior. That’s not how you act in public, to think it’s okay to purposefully wake up a sleeping baby.” To which she replied “how are we supposed to know they sleeping!?” And my spouse replied, “well he’s right here as you can clearly see, or just realize you’re in a tiny elevator?”

As we’re disembarking, walking away and removing ourselves from the whole situation, the three continue to run their mouths, dropping what would constitute ‘fighting words’ in the state we are in at our backs until the other girl shouts across the mall, “Yeah that’s right, [our skin color] bitch, keep on walking while you know we’re talking to yo asses!” repeatedly cursing at us. My spouse & I both finally turned and retorted “Listen here, you dumb little fucking broad, learn how to carry yourself and maybe you’d be worth a response” then, admittedly an over reaction, my spouse added, “Get fucked, you stupid bitch”

Normally we don’t even take notice of any passerby and if we’d been on a lift where someone laughed at an appropriate volume which just happens to wake the baby? I wouldn’t have said a word, but I just can not believe the entitlement and lack of decorum we’ve run into in this city. It’s insane. This should’ve been a nonevent, but despite attempting to just walk away, they continued screaming and berating us across an entire mall. Thoughts?
