Refinishing cabinets

Hi. What's the best way to go about refinishing cabinets for durable finish? I've seen some videos where people prime, spray, sand and spray again for a other coat. I've also seen some videos where people use formaica sheets and it looks fantastic. Anyone have any personal experience with either process they can share ? Thank you.
