Question about EQing

Hi all! I’m new-ish to DJing and finally starting to understand how important EQing is for smooth transitions. When mixing tracks, do you usually cut the lows/mids/highs of the incoming track, the track that’s playing, or both? Any tips on using EQs for clean transitions would be awesome.
