[DISCUSSION] alternative sexual politics in gangsta rap in conversation with hardcore punk
this will be kind of long, tldr i am looking for examples of gangsta rap that forgoes hypermasculinity cw hate speech, its necessary for this discussion im a novice in hip hop so i need some help here. i was listening to straight outta compton today when the similarities between nwa (and the general attitude of gangsta rap) and one of my favorite punk musicians, gg allin, struck me. both are deliberately offensive in order to cultivate a "badass" image, using misogyny, homophobia, and crime in their lyrics among other things to achieve this goal. comparing them made me notice a key difference: gg allin uses masculinity, and with it misogyny and homophobia, as a tool to enhance his image (see "drink, fight and fuck," "die when you die") sometimes, but at other times identifies himself with the groups he objectifies and ridicules (see "sluts in the city," im having a hard time remembering the other examples im looking for). in other words, he alternates between derisively calling others sluts and fags and proudly calling himself a slut and a fag. in gangsta rap, however, it appears that artists insist on masculinity as the core of their identity, not exploring beyond the hypermasculine caricature in their quest to shock and offend. but because of my limited knowledge i feel like i must be wrong about this, that in the same sense that gg allin was the exception to the (then) strictly masculine world of hardcore punk there must be a similar exception in the realm of gangsta rap. please give me any examples you can think of that contradict my assumption
