Bicycle rides in rome?

Hey, im moving to rome soon and will live in the via aurelia area near the vatican. I want to get a bicycle so i dont need to depend on metro but is it worth it? Are the pavements good in rome? I come from greece and i think everyone knows how bad pavements are here—will I be seeing something similar in rome?
