The Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) is a modern and rapid test that evaluates the function of the semicircular canals (canals) in the inner ear. It is used to determine the health of the vestibular system, particularly in patients experiencing vertigo.
How is the vHIT Test Performed?
During the test, the patient is asked to gaze at a fixed point. The clinician quickly moves the patient’s head to the right, left, up, or down by small angles (10–20°). Normally, the eyes remain fixed on the target thanks to the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). If there is a disorder in the involved semicircular canal, the eyes cannot remain fixed and move with the head. This results in corrective eye movements (saccades).
