Should I be as upset as I am about a situation?
This happened 4 years ago but I only just found out the full truth of it. I lived with a group of people and thought we were all friends, or at least got on together. One day, I come home from work and they tell me someone has egged my car. I check and assume it's a group of kids or the guy from upstairs. They watched me running around trying to figure it out, having to get it cleaned ect. It was only a shitty civic but I still don't want that to happen to my stuff and eggs have sulfur in them which damages the paint straight away. 4 years later (yesterday), I met one of the people from that group (Polly) and she casually laughed about that time they egged my car. It was them. She thought I knew and realised her mistake when she discovered I didn't. I didn't say much else and we still hung out all fine; I needed to digest what I just heard. Later that night, I messaged Polly asking for the details - who called on the idea, who was involved, who saw it. She basically fobbs me off, trying to make it light-hearted, saying it was so long ago.
The next day, I met a different person from that group (Jane) to use some DJ decks in a studio. She didn't live there at the time; she moved in after all that happened. She brings up Polly, I say why I'm not happy with them and it turns out she also knew what they did to my car. She said someone mentioned it in passing and thought it was already a settled matter between all us. So everyone knew except me. After hearing this, I packed my stuff and left. She's wondering why I'm annoyed at her and I do feel like she caught a bit of a stray bullet here, but I just have no trust for any of them now. She might not have been there, but I'd imagine she would have joined in if she was or at the very least let it happen and not told me.
I get a voicenote from Polly because Janes told her about my leaving. Polly is saying my feelings are valid but it was so long ago, it was a chaotic time and we all used to do stuff like this to eachother. Now, we all used to banter and rip on eachother, but the person getting it would be present, so everyone was involved. I also can't think of any time someones stuff was damaged for jokes.
So, I feel like the rugs been pulled from under me over the last 4 years with the group of friends. They're trying to make it sound like it's a minor thing. In Polly's voice note she said it wasn't it wasn't vindictive but it feels like that to me. When I think of egging someone's car - that's someone I actively dislike.
Some context that might be relevant - I was the only person in that house with any kind of serious career. They all floated around more. I was also the only one with a car, I happily let them jump in whenever or picked up any big thing we would need for events. I was also fairly generous in that house, if we were out I'd buy a round but they all bought their own drinks. I let it be cuz I knew they didn't have money like that. It feels like a kick in the teeth now.
So, I'm leaning towards just hard cutting them all off. I don't know if I can be comfortable around any of them anymore. It feels unsafe - obviously not physically unsafer, but more emotionally/trusty wise. Am I doing too much? And what about Jane? I know she didn't do anyting herself but that whole corner of my life feels tainted now. If it was just one person who done it, I could just have an issue witt them directly. But it was all of them.
