Moving roles
Hi all, Looking for some advice here. I’m currently a devops engineer with approx 10 years experience working in tech (grad role, systems engineer) I’m currently on maternity leave but will be going back to work soon but I’m honestly not really looking forward to going back to working in devops. It was never my strong suit, I’ve sort of just coasted by so far. I know it’s not great, but I’m just being honest here.
The team I’m on has had a big change since I’ve started my leave so they’ll be new devops engineers when I join back who’ll possibly be looking to me for advice and i really don’t think I’ll be able to provide it. I was barely getting by before and since mat leave I haven even looked at anything tech related.
Saying that I’m hoping to go into a less technical role on my return to work. I’ve been looking into possibly moving into product owner/manager or project manager. I would also consider technical project manager but I’m unsure how technical it is (if anyone has insights on this it’ll be greatly appreciated)
Would anyone have any advice as to how to bring this up to my manager? I know the usual way is to ask about moving up in a company but I’ve only been at this company for a short while so I’m not sure being promoted especially after being absent for almost a year is the right pre-course for it.
