Alpine Rewind

Poem

I love to ski out there
Out there without a care
A care for where I'm going
I'm going to the mountains
The mountains where I glide
I gilde on down the side
The side where I take flight
Take flight into the night.

The night quiets my mind
My mind where I can find
Can find my deeper thoughts
Deeper thoughts where fights are fought
Are fought within the past
The past where shadows cast
Cast a spell on agency
Agency gets stuck, not free.

Not free, so I got me
Got me upon my skis
My skis that give me time
Time to settle my mind
My mind is sick of doubt
Doubt of what my life's about
Life's about to take me down
Down, so I ski to the ground.

The ground of the Alpines
Alpines where I rewind
Rewind and speak the truth
Truth that settles muddled youth
Muddled youth starts to protest
Protest — it prefers to rest
Rest in impotent excuse
Excuse, subconscious self-abuse.

Self-abuse from shadow self
Self that sabotages health
Health is aimed at, but is missed
Missed within a hazy mist
Mist unlike the Alpine weather
Weather that will make me better
Better able to address
Address the inner, nervous guest.

Nervous guest makes histories
Histories of what it sees
What it sees is prejudiced
Prejudiced, with details missed
Missed: It would have seen the light
Light to triumph over night
Over night that limits it
Limits it, to urge to quit

Urge to quit is impotent
Impotent, perspective bent
Bent until it steps in faith
Faith that tells it it is safe
Safe to claim identity
Identity, aligned to be
To be wholly unafraid
Unafraid of the grenade.

The grenade that blasts the head
The head that once had said
Said it couldn't take a step
Take a step, no, not adept
Not adept, can't make a choice
A choice in all this noise
Noise that cripples confidence
Confidence, said its cadence.

Cadence stops and shuffles back
Back to follow in the track
The track outlined by the skiis
Skiis that weave among the trees
Trees rise high, far out of view
View expands to something new
Something new is dropping in
Dropping in, strength arisen.

Arisen like the peaks
The peaks where I have seeked
Have seeked some peace of mind
Peace of mind in my rewind
Rewind flying on my skiis
Skiis that glide into the breeze
Breeze that blows upon this night
Night when all is set aright.
