What would you do? At fault driver was a little underinsured.

I’m in North Carolina. My wife’s vehicle is a total loss. The other drivers insurance (State Farm) valued our car at $49,500 and so far the towing and storage fees are about $2000. The at fault driver had $50,000 in property damage coverage.

The most recent State Farm rep said in an email “The total value of your vehicle exceeds our $50,000.00 policy limit. State Farm will need you to go through your insurance company, for the handling the total loss of your 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander.”

1)This representative did not give me the actual amount State Farm would pay us. Would it be the $50,000-$2,000=$48,000.00? (I have emailed her back asking for itemized line items for the claim but haven’t received anything yet.)

  1. I assume going through our insurance (progressive) will increase our premiums. If the difference in the payout is $1500 ($49,500 vs $48,000) and we can avoid increasing our premiums for the next few years should we just take the 48k? Also we have a permitted 16 year old that will be getting her license in a few months so it will be going up anyway.

Would we end up paying more in premiums than we would get by going through our insurance? Am I overthinking this? What would you do?
