(Parent) do these IEP meeting questions need to be adjusted?
Hello everyone!
First, thank you to all the educators who are helping our children, it means so much to me.
My son is in 5th grade and we have moved states. He has an IEP meeting coming up and I’d like to know if the questions I have, are ok to ask. I have been through this many times, however I just want to be sure I’m not missing anything.
I am bringing a list of my major concerns for him, as well as the “at home” worksheets I make, in case they can help direct me to implement these goals outside of the school environment. I’ve only, so far, been making ELA worksheets (fill in the blank, multiple choice etc.) with his current vocab every week, math, and a touch of writing. It’s hard for me to know exactly what they are testing or quizzing him on and what is expected, because he cannot communicate very effectively to tell me what is due/what he needs help with/ what he did in class. He goes to speech for 30 mins, but I’ve mentioned his communication issues to them already and so far so good. I just want to be able to help support the educators who are setting these goals, too.
As far as I know he is in general education and does not get taken out for anything except speech. School has not been in session long.
Now, here’s a list of questions I wrote down. Does this need adjusting? Please let me know. This can get kind of confusing for me so I apologize if anything is unclear.
-
Should my son be checking out books at his grade level or is he free to choose any book? (We have moved to many different states and districts, which all have different rules about this, personally I would prefer if he stopped picking 1st-2nd grade level books, however I do believe reading shouldn’t be a chore, but something he enjoys).
-
How can we help support your work and goals set for him at home?
-
Is he able to get extended deadlines OR comprehensive notes to study when he is taken out for speech?
-
How is his progress toward IEP goals being measured and shared?
-
Is he on track for a diploma or is he being guided toward a certificate?
I can’t think of anything else to ask, my brain if fried from all the classwork, homework, tests, and appointments he has. I apologize.
Thank you again!
