I think we should be concerned about how dangerously normalized the "All civilians are responsible for their country's atrocities" mentality is on the internet.
Every day I see comments saying that all Jews should be eradicated from the Earth becuse of the atrocities in Gaza, that all Americans should die because of what they did in Iraq in 2003, that all Muslims should die because of the atrocities of ISIS, Hamas, Al Qaeda, etc., that the only solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is to commit genocide with the Russians, I even know a guy who claims that Japan should have eradicated the Chinese in the 40s purely because China has a communist government.
Now I'm going to explain why I find this mentality dangerous.
- If we are strict, NO nation is innocent.
If we follow that logic, all Ukrainians are responsible for Bandera murdering thousands of Poles in Wolyn during World War II, that all Spaniards should die for the atrocities committed during the colonization of America, that all Belgians should be killed for the genocide in the Congo, and well, you get the idea.
- If you think that all the inhabitants of a country should suffer consequences for their actions, then shouldn't you assume the actions of yours?
I mean, comments like "what about the invasion of Iraq or the Bengal famine" (for example) exist for a reason.
- What about those who are against the atrocities of those countries?
There are hundreds of Jewish movements that are against Netanyahu, there are hundreds of Muslims who are against ISIS, Hamas, Al Qaeda, etc., and there are hundreds of Russians who are against the invasion of Ukraine.
So until someone takes the time to verify that the billion-plus Muslims all support Islamism, that the 143 million Russians all support the invasion of Ukraine, that the 1.4 billion Chinese all support the CCP, that the 12 million Jews all support Netanyahu, that is propaganda I will never fall for.
- Obviously, this is propaganda created to radicalize.
This last one is very self-descriptive.
