Does being gay/lesbian/bisexual mean that you're attracted to the sex, or to their qualities alone?

Is it possible that gay people are attracted to masculinity, lesbians to femininity, and bisexual to both masculinity and femininity in any gender or sex?

I'm asking this because the difference is good to know, because what if someone is attracted to the quality but that quality can exist in any gender or sex, not just the one that they may find attractive now? I've not heard many people talk about this
