AIO about to leave an angry review
I got back from a niche work-related conference two days ago. The conference app is still live and I'm being prompted to review the speakers, but I'm so angry about the content, I just need some unbiased feedback before I let them have it.
The conference was mid-week and three days long, so I'm missing a full week of work when you include travel days. I was so excited for it.
They had speakers that were highly respected from different aspects of our field. Authors, prolific article writers, thought leaders, innovators, a great lineup.
What the fuck is up with humiliating your audience? Is this a trend I'm just not aware of? If it had happened once, I'd shrug it off as misguided humor, but, it happened in 13 out of 15 sessions.
In one session they played the song I've heard bits and pieces of "everybody clap your hands, left foot stomp, turn to the right, cha cha cha ..." but we're in an auditorium so we're stepping on each other and it's weird and awkward and it went on and on and on for minutes.
Annoying. But it got worse.
Next session I went to that was about legal updates in our field, ten or twelve minutes of "okay left side of the room are puppies and right side of the room is kangaroos, find each other and try to explain your favorite Christmas present" and then the next session which was about safety in the workplace there were constant, like every few sentences, "turn to the person beside you and say That's Right!" And on and on, "turn to the person beside you and say You Got This!" On and on. Next one which was about discipline and workplace policies she would read the slides, all except the last word in each slide, then turn to the audience and say "what?" And we had to yell out the last word of the slide. If we didn't do it loud enough she'd ask again.
Fucking kindergarten bullshit. On and on. Only two speakers had subject-relevant audience participation. All the others had weird humiliation and compliance rituals.
I paid a lot of money and missed a week of work and I HAD been so excited to meet and hear from these speakers. Now I dislike them all except two.
What? Why? Do they get off on seeing a whole audience of strangers awkwardly pantomining and parroting meaningless phrases? What is this trend? Why are educated, accomplished people humiliating their audience? And why so many? I don't understand!
By halfway through the last day, I'd had it. I walked out of one session which was supposed to be about performance metrics on the job when she asked us to get in groups of four and talk about our favorite genre of music. Nope, out the door for me. Then I walked out of the next session when we were barely 20 minutes into what was supposed to be an hour and a half about mental health, but the speaker kept asking us to yell out "yes!" Or "wooo!" Or "not today!" To affirm every other sentence. Like we were at a self-motivation event instead of trying to take notes on a highly relevant work-related topic. Then i walked out of the next one when the speaker kept making finger gestures and asking us to hold up our hands to mimic her gestures. Bitch, I'm trying to take notes, it's annoying to keep moving my notebook and setting down my pen to show you my left thumb and right pinky.
What is this? Why are so many different speakers, unrelated, from different fields, different parts of the country, different ages, diffetent educational backgrounds, all somehow got the memo to inconvenience and distract their audience as much as possible and detract from the quality of their work? Which we paid a lot of money for and took a full week off of work to experience?
I'm about to leave 13 scathing reviews and two glowing ones. I'm so angry and i feel so cheated and disappointed. These performative irrelevant "audience participation" distractions would be more suited for eight year olds at Vacation Bible School, not professionals seeking growth and learning in our field.
Talk me out of it!
