Parental Threat Of Eviction
Location: Iowa
I’m an adult in [Iowa/Nebraska] living in my parents’ home. They’ve threatened to kick me out, change the locks, and even call the police on me on an almost daily basis
This is part of a 12-year history of abuse since I was 11. I’ve been subjected to: • Verbal/emotional abuse (“you’ve been half-assing since birth,” “what’s wrong with your brain?”) • Psychological manipulation & coercive control (micromanaging brushing my teeth, showering, even eating) • Financial exploitation (forced to do all the dog care/household work with no pay) • Threats (burning my belongings siccing dogs on me) • Neglect & sabotage (preventing me from learning to drive, isolating me, pressuring me until I flunked college and lost jobs, isolating me from family friends and family)
My parents also cut me off from outside support and regularly threaten to throw me out. Recently they told me if I leave for a concert I bought a ticket for, I’ll come home to locked doors.
My questions: • Can they legally change the locks without a court eviction? • If they try to throw me out, what immediate protections do I have? • Are there state/local resources for adult children trapped in abusive households?
