What should I ask my surgeon?
Hello everyone, this is my first time posting here. After spending the summer being treated for a severe bone infection leading to the amputation of my big toe, my podiatry surgeon wants to perform a third surgery. Prior to this happening i needed approval from my PCP and cardiology. Well the cardiologist insisted on a chemical stress test which revealed scarring. That led to an aortic catheterization which revealed (from my less than thorough understanding) 100% blockage on the right side and 70% and 80% blockage on the left side. They are referring me for bypass surgery. This was all handled by a VA Hospital. Because they don't handle heart surgery they are sending me to an outside provider. I looked into the surgeon who will be taking over my care and he seems to be stellar. He has a lot of reviews and they're perfect, all of them. His training is top notch as well (residency at Cedars Sanai, fellowship at George Washington University).
I'm going to see him on the 8th and i have no idea what to expect. What should concern me? What do i need to know? What should I ask?
Im 57 male, diabetic (uncontrolled for decades), smoker, non-drinker, very inactive this year due to the bone infection and amputation. Family history has heart problems on both sides. Mom suffered major heart attacks, but she eventually died from leukemia. Dad had a pacemaker, died from basically his entire body shutting down.
I am working with my endocrinologist and getting my blood sugar down, and I am slowly replacing cigarettes with patches.
I've been through hell this year. It was so bad I had a fractured rib that I didn't even complain about. I would have never known if my pcp didn't order chest x-rays for her approval for the third foot surgery. So yeah, it was so bad I didn't even feel a fractured rib. Of course I was on pain meds already for my foot. I still felt that pain. At home I take medically prescribed marijuana which I use a dry herb vaporizer for pain. Between the Air Force and VA I was on opioids for over 20 years (11 prior knee surgeries including a chondrosarcoma).
The chondrosarcoma and amputation recoveries were hell! So much worse than even kidney stones. What should I expect with bypass recovery? I don't know if I can go through that again.
Anyway, if you have questions I should ask, or knowledge of what to expect I'd greatly appreciate it. I've googled a lot, but I can only get answers to questions i know about.
Thanks!
