What to do when the self-sabotage feeling kicks in?
Hey, guys! I (27F) have been recently struggling with a feeling that I’m not important to the person I’m seeing (29M). It’s making me want to self-sabotage, and I’d like your advice.
I’ve been seeing this guy from the gym for about a month. We’ve known each other for over two years and I care about him a lot. For the past three weekends in a row, he’s been the one asking me out, and we’ve had a great time each time. This weekend, though, we didn’t go out. At the end of our last date, he said he wanted to see me more often but worried that I was busy with college and didn’t want to bother me. I reassured him that I could make time for him, but he kept repeating the same thing. That’s when my mind started spiraling, thinking, “Maybe he doesn’t want to see me anymore.”
I tried to be reasonable and considered the possibilities:
- Maybe he was being sincere about respecting my time.
- Maybe he’s running low on money and feels awkward about it (he always insists on paying even though I’ve offered to split the bill).
Since I didn’t see him all week this week (I was sick and missed the gym), I texted him to check in. Neither of us are big texters; we prefer talking in person. But I wanted to reach out. The conversation went fine: he asked about my exams, returned my questions, everything normal.
Here are my last three messages to him:
- “That’s okay! Whenever possible, you have to take the chance to relax a bit.”
- “I thought it was impressive those 105 kg you lifted the other day as well, that's crazyyy. That probably makes you relax too.”
- “🙂↕️ I'm going to take it easy though (at college).”
He didn’t respond to these. Even a quick heart emoji would’ve been enough for me, but the silence made me feel… ignored. Last night, I started spiraling again and it wasn’t nice but I tried to control it. In the past, I’ve been ghosted by people I really cared about (my best friend of 11 years and someone I’d been dating for a long time), so when someone doesn’t reply, I feel deeply rejected and want to leave before they leave me.
Any similar experiences? Any advice? Please, be kind. I’m dating after a whole year, after really bad experiences and I’m trying my best. Thank you all!
