Feeling alone and don't know how to make friends
I'm in my late 30s, married, without kids and i feel very alone and I don't know what to do about it. I have a loving wife but it's not healthy that I rely solely on her for my interpersonal needs. I'm not very sporty and I don't involve myself in many clubs and I don't drink or don't go to bars which makes it difficult to meet people. I live in the country where there aren't very many people of my age or with my interests so happening upon someone and striking up a conversation just doesn't happen for me. When I do meet people I feel like they're distant or don't want to get to know me maybe. I don't feel like I'm particularly unlikable. I get the feeling that's it's more because I'm male. I grew up in the generation where I was told that I was aggressive and unlikable because I was male, which is understandable given the state of things at the time. Women got all the positive discourse and encouragement when I was young and don't get me wrong I'm 100% for that, women deserve and need that encouragement because society is unfair. But me personally I got the other end of it and I've suffered a long time for it. I never got any encouragement. Rather the opposite. I don't remember the last time anyone really showed any interest in me, apart from my wife of course, and wanted to get to know me. Maybe back at uni like 15 years ago. It happened slowly over a long period. I realise now I think I don't have very much hope that people will want to get to know me so I don't try anymore but I still really want to make new friends.
What do you do? How do you cope with this sort of thing? Do you feel that it's justified to feel this way or is it in my head?
I realise that Reddit is probably not the best place to put myself out there, but I don't know any other place. Thanks for your input.
