I dropped out
And I'm glad that I did! The start of first year was decent, I enjoyed the novelty of being independent, meeting people and being a student was exciting and fun. But from the third week, I began resenting my course, I attended probably 2 lectures a week and no seminars. Instead I spent my time unable to get out of bed unless I was going out or playing something with my new friends, and I continued like this until Christmas.
When I returned home, I was like "I'm having a great time". I had just started a relationship and had passed the very basic exams I had in that first semester and everything felt good. But in the easter term, I lost sight of what I wanted. I was now attending no lectures at all, and instead spent my time in my girlfriend's room, going back to mine at 4am and sleeping through the day. The assignments began stacking up and I was ever more isolated.
Then during the final term, I finally broke up with my girlfriend who was distracting me from everything in my life outside of her, and instead went back to doing my work (partially because I had to, exams were coming up) but I still couldn't find the energy to socialise, so now I spent all my time in my room instead.
Over the summer, I've had such a great time; being with my family, with the support and happiness that they provide, working at a job that allows some socialising but not to the point that I'm worn out. I've been so much less anxious and depressed and so why would I go back to the situation that made me feel so down? I've realised just how much I hate lectures, seminars, procrastinating (and the guilt that comes with that) and living on my own. So why on earth would I PAY to do that for another two years? Uni just is not for me at this point, and I'm so glad I've realised that now rather than later, when I've wasted even more time, money and mental energy.
