AITA for threatening court after my roommate’s cat ruined my MacBook?

Made a new burner acc for this. I (24F) live w two roommates, J (25F) and T (23M). We’ve been in this apt almost a year and things were fine til J “suprised us” by bringing home a rescue cat. She just walked in like “guys meet Olive!” No asking, nothing. Lease requires a pet deposit + me n T never agreed. J swore she’d cover everything and keep Olive in her room till trained. Fucking liar.

Olive’s cute but a menace. Scratches furniture, knocks stuff over, climbs everywhere. T just ignores it but I’m the one cleaning up after her. I have a MacBook Pro I saved up for, it’s my lifeline. I told J multiple times not to let Olive in my room. I keep my door shut but sometimes she leaves it open “so Olive can explore.” I told her it’s crossing a boundary, she laughs n says I’m controlling.

Couple weeks ago I come home and my laptop’s on the floor, screen cracked, glass of water spilled over it. Dead. I showed J and she just goes “you cant prove it was Olive.” I told her she needs to pay (about $1200). She refuses, says she’s broke and “just wanted to give Olive a good home.”

I told her if she doesn’t pay I’ll take her to small claims + report Olive to the landlord. She starts crying saying I’m threatening her and “trying to take away her baby.” T stays out of it 🙄. Now J barely talks to me. Friends are split: some say she owes me, others say suing her is an AH move and I should let it go. But this is literally my work computer and I can’t afford to replace it.

So AITA for demanding $1200 and threatening court if she won’t pay??
