For reference, I am not the biggest supporter for Universes Beyond sets (especially recently). Once these sets became more frequent and most of all Standard-legal, I lost interest in the idea.

I began Magic with the older block system with set blocks and so can understand why that may missed by infranchised players. But, I cannot ignore how significant Universes Beyond is so have included it in this personal roadmap.

I can completely agree if people will disagree with what I say (everyone has their own opinions), but discussion about this is better than nothing so share your ideas below.

With the 2026 roadmap showing 7 sets (4 Universes Beyond, 3 in-universe), I’ve been thinking about what a healthier yearly release cycle could look like (especially with the amount of backlash I have seen). Here’s my take on the topic:

My proposed structure: 5 sets per year

3 Universes Within (original Magic IP)

2 Universes Beyond (licensed external IP)

Only 1 Universes Beyond set would be Standard-legal

The other can be a premium/commander-style release, not Standard-legal (similar to prior releases such as 40K and Dr Who)

Release Schedule:

January: Universes Within

April: Universes Beyond (Standard-legal)

July: Universes Within

October: Universes Within

December: Universes Beyond (not Standard-legal, premium product)

Two of the three Universes Within sets can share mechanics/worlds/concepts (like old-style blocks: Ravnica, Ixalan, etc.), to minimise potential bloat.

The Standard-legal Universes Beyond should fit the “feel” of Magic (e.g. Lord of the Rings, Assassin’s Creed).

AS I SAID BEFORE, I AM NOT FULLY SUPPORTIVE OF PREMIUM UB SETS. THIS SUGGESTION IS HERE AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO STRIKE A BALANCE. DISAGREEMENT IS ABSOLUTELY FINE.

The December premium Universes Beyond is where more unusual IPs (e.g. Marvel, Star Trek) can live. This allows for holiday sales for WoTC/Hasbro whilst not forcing it upon people due to it being more focused on formats such as Commander rather than Standard.

Again, this is my own opinion and am interested what you all think.

Thank you for your time,

O
