How to transplant wild type fragaria virginiana for ground cover

Hi all. I have been using fragaria virginiana as a ground cover in my backyard to great success so far. To the point the are is now filled. However whenever I cut off runners and move them to a new area to try and fill it in they immediately die, even with frequent watering and predator protection. They just shrivel up and die. What am I missing ?
