dating someone with AvPD
Hello! I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for this. I am dating someone who has been recently diagnosed with AvPD. We've been dating for several months since last year, got into a relationship in april and he abruptly broke things off at the beginning of august for no particular reason. The trigger was a fight on our holiday but i feel like it could've been anything. We took a needed break this august and after a lot of necessary conversation we started dating again this month. He told me about his diagnoses and it explained a lot. He apologized for ending things the way he did and he told me he wishes he could've handled the situation differently.
I care deeply for him. He goes to therapy every week and I am really proud of him. I know not every person with AvPD functions the same way but I was wondering how I could support him. He doesn't really initiates dates/hang-outs and I know it doesn't mean he is disinterested, but it does make me feel insecure sometimes. I haven't really told him this because I don't know how to word it properly and I also don't want to make him feel bad about it because I know he is trying his best. Besides that he struggles with going out and he definitely appreciates his alone time more than I do.
Okay, I am rambling a lot but my question is: How can i support him without being too much and without abandoning my own needs? I sometimes feel like my enthusiasm smothers him. We are highly compatible, he's extremely funny and intelligent, handsome, talented and kind. I sometimes can't fathom that someone who is this lovely is into me and I am really lucky to have him in my life. His self-esteem is rather low and I hope that some day he will see himself the way that I see him.
