With a 35k budget

Im in Canada and need to purchase a car that can accommodate two car seats. I want to spend 35k all said and down (so with taxes) and plan to finance with a good down payment. I’ve been looking at the Mazda 5, but was shocked to see that budget only gets me something with close to 100k kms. Should I be looking at a cheaper option “newer” car? I was just thinking Mazda as I’ve read a lot of posts here and consumer reports. The car salesman was trying to convince me that a new Mazda 5 costs 40k and I need to just increase my budget, that it’s dumb to buy a used car for that much. I felt a lot of arrogance from him and I’m worried about trusting something that was said just to get me to spend more. Thank you
