Is 8 GB of Vram enough nowadays?

Discussion

So this is kind of a rant but here goes. I have a laptop with a Ryzen 9 6900hx, RTX 3080, 32 GB of RAM. It has 8gb of vram and that has been enough for basically every game I've played. I've played some pretty graphically impressive games (space marine 2 at max settings, battlefield, etc) but I recently got stalker 2 and it ran okay at first but once I got to the main area, it was unplayable. Stuttering, running at like 5 fps basically. That was on low settings. Apparently you need more than 8gb of vram to run that game good. Although I've heard it runs bad on more powerful rigs too. Now I'm like scared to buy new games in case my laptop can't run them smoothly. Should I start looking to upgrade? Or is this game just horribly optimized? I've heard the vram requirements are increasing but damn seems fast.
