Could you help me put together the fighters in my story?

I'm writing a story about a tournament where gods choose humans to represent them in order to win. The point is, I don't know whether to have the tournament with 16 or 32 participants. I still need to think about the humans who will fight and the gods they represent. Could you give me some ideas if it's not too much trouble?
