What happened to the darkspawn?

I'm currently playing through The Descent DLC for Inquisition and my god I forgot how bad the darkspawn look. How did we go from the darkspawn in Origins to the designs in Inquisition? I'll give it to them that the demons look great (though definitely missing the desire demons), but man they really biffed it with the darkspawn.
