AITA for the way I reacted to my roommate lying about moving out
This one’s a while ago but I still think about it. At 22 I was in my final year of university and shared a place with two other girls. One of them (D) I was in the same volunteer group with so we had some mutual acquaintances and attend things together. (D) would also invite me out to the movies from time to time, she bought me a birthday present (a vase). The other housemate (L) kept to herself mainly but we would eat together and shared tasks like cleaning and mowing the lawn. The university year was coming to an end and we had plans to attend a horse racing event together. Around this time (L) had said she would be moving states at the end of the year. (D) one night also mentioned she intended to move out. I therefore decided to move out as well. A few weeks passed and it came time to give notice to the real estate agency. Things with (D) and (L) seemed a bit off although she did invite me to join her on her radio show which I did. Also a movie with her best friend at uni. Over the coming weeks a couple from our volunteer group came to check out the rooms (mine and ‘L’). It became evident that (D) had changed her mind and wasn’t going to be moving out. I asked her why she hadn’t said anything. She just said she wasn’t sure but I also then found out her best friend was moving in as well because she wasn’t getting along with her housemate. I felt lied to and at this point it also felt like both L and D had been talking behind my back and I didn’t know why. I felt blindsided. Why had (D) been being nice and spending time with me if she didn’t like me. I packed up what I could as the atmosphere was not pleasant. Stayed at my mum’s. One day I got a text about paying my final rent money. It was the same amount as the bond share I was supposed to be paid by the new people taking over my room. I did not want to see or speak with D or trust her do I said to collect keep the bond share from the new tenant instead since the amounts were the same. Both D and L were not happy about this thinking I was skipping out on rent. I didn’t see it that way. The bond share and rent values were the same. I got some nasty calls and texts. I explained the situation to the agent got the lease removal form and on move out day left them that to sign with $100 towards bills. There was a letter left for me when I came to get my bed and bigger items where D said she hadn’t wanted to continue living with me. Turns out they never signed the lease removal form so they kept me on there when I wasn’t living there. I got another one to sign weeks later. I signed and sent a copy of my original lease removal form plus theirs and a copy of my removalist receipts/booking with a letter to the agent explaining things and asking to ensure I was taken off. I tried speaking to L at one point to explain my side and she said D was nice just to keep the peace. Anyway, I never saw either of them again after it.
