Hardwood before kitchen Reno?

Let me start by saying I have zero experience with flooring or home renovation.

We moved into our house with the idea that we would make changes along the way. Our first floor has pretty hardwood for most of the rooms, but the kitchen floor into one of the living spaces has a busy cool toned gray tile that I despise- especially because the kitchen cabinets are a warm white. It makes decorating the adjoining rooms so challenging and is an eyesore to me.

I would love to replace it with hardwood that matches the rest of the first floor. My dilemma is, we also want to eventually change the layout of the kitchen and get rid of an existing peninsula, add more cabinets, and maybe an island. Financially we are several years out from this, though. Maybe 5 years at the earliest. My question is, is it ludicrous to update the flooring now knowing we will ultimately be making other changes later? I don’t know with the process of hardwood if it’s easy to “patch” in areas later if we remove the peninsula or something else, or if that’s not possible without refinishing the whole floor later to have it uniform.

I’m okay with a little redundancy in terms of labor and cost to get rid of the existing tile sooner, but obviously don’t want to have to completely start over in 5 years. Any feedback or experience is appreciated!
