Tariff Question on Gifts while Traveling
Hi all,
My wife and I got married this year. She is originally from China (was already a US citizen before we got married, if that matters), and as our honeymoon we are going to China to celebrate with her extended family that could not make it to our wedding. Typically, when I travel, I don't really have to worry about things like bringing gifts/cash back to the US because I usually spend and not receive, but since we are going there in a celebratory manner, this time is going to be the opposite.
He family is generally more well off, and she was a very spoiled grandchild while she lived in China. There is no doubt in my mind that they are going to end up giving us gifts, buying us things, etc while we are there, which is where I'm facing my confusion:
My confusion comes with travel back to the US. If we are given both regular and monetary gifts, what are we supposed to do? I won't know the value of these things (other than cash, obviously), so what doni do if customs asks me questions about things that I/we are bringing back? Is there a limit of cash that can be brought back? If I have to declare a cash gift, does it get taxed? Let's just say they gave me $10k (I don't expect anything like that, but for sake of example, let's us it), what am I supposed to do and be prepared for.
Thanks for your help in this matter!
