The Three Doctors- regeneration archetypes
After my recent rewatch, I felt each regeneration slotted into three primary archetypes:
The Curmudgeonly Wizard- One, Three, Six, Nine, War, Twelve, Fugitive
The Trickster- Two, Four, Seven, Eleven
The Human- Five, Eight, Ten/Fourteen, Thirteen, Fifteen
Of course, each Doctor is complicated and nuanced, with different levels and moods, but I thought there were clear overarching patterns.
In Classic Who it alternated between the serious and the silly until Five broke the mold with his more human characterisation. Since then, Nu Who definitely skewed human.
For me, this idea didn't oversimplify them but actually helped me appreciate each different take.
For example, I think Three is misclassified as a Byronic dandy or an action hero; his era certainly introduces these elements, but fundamentally he is a return to Hartnell's grumpy warlock, except this time with a greater thirst for knowledge.
