How famous are the Disney princesses compared to their villains?
Okay so recently I noticed a pattern. At least in my opinion and experience, no princess and their corresponding villain have the same level of “fame” when it comes to popularity.
For example. Inarguably the biggest princess: Cinderella. I barely hear anything about lady Tremaine anywhere on the internet.
Second: Snow White did have a lot of attention and award, but every time I see anything Snow related it’s Evil Queen this Evil Queen that. The whole movie imo centres around the Queen and especially the parks. I could believe that The Evil Queen at the meet and greets got popular because of the Snow White live action despite all the hate it got, but in that new movie the Queen got as much messed up as Snow did. Yet the original Evil Queen was literally everywhere in the Disney park feeds. Maybe because she was such a good actor. In terms of the two lineups (princess and villain) I feel like the Evil Queen is very much the front of her lineup but Snow isn’t the front of her own.
Then Aurora and Maleficent. Again, this is one of my favorite examples. Aurora very much gets forgotten (not on this subreddit ofc) but Maleficent is very much popular and recognized. Aurora is popular in group merch tho in my experience.
Belle and Gaston. I hardly see Gaston in any Disney villain related stuff, yet Belle is everywhere in things of her own context.
Ariel is very popular, yet still I see Ursula topping that a lot of time in merch and basic discussion.
Also I have barely seen any content about mother gothel. It took forever for Disneyland or Disneyworld to get a mother gothel and she’s not mentioned in the villain lineups that much. I don’t think she’s a forgotten villain, though, she totally belongs in the main lineup.
My point is that the most popular Disney movies either have a villain or the princess carrying out the legacy. Tell me what you’ve seen. I’d love a discussion!
