AITA for charging my sibling rent since they’re staying with me long term?
So, my younger sibling (22) moved in with me about six months ago after losing their job. At first, I didn’t mind I figured it would be a couple of weeks until they got back on their feet. I live in a two bedroom apartment that I pay for entirely myself, so I let them use the spare room.
Fast forward six months, and they’re still here. They’ve gotten a part time job, but they don’t really contribute to groceries, utilities, or rent. I’ve been covering everything, and it’s honestly starting to take a toll on me financially.
Last week, I brought up the idea of them paying me a small amount of rent ($300/month) to help with bills, since they’re earning now. I wasn’t asking for half the rent, just enough to make it fair. They got really upset and accused me of being selfish and “treating family like strangers.” My parents also think I’m being harsh, saying “family helps family,” but none of them are offering to pay my bills.
I don’t want to kick my sibling out, but I also don’t think it’s fair that I’m subsidizing their lifestyle while they spend their money on eating out and new clothes.
AITA for asking them to pay rent?
