My thoughts on the reboot
As soon as it hit Netflix at midnight, I started watching. Granted, I had already seen some episodes, but I still watched again.
There were so many moments where I found myself going "ew" at whatever was on screen at the time. Especially the Specialists, dear God, they look terrifying.
My biggest issue with this reboot is the writing. People keep saying, "It was written for kids, stop complaining." Yes, the target age group is children. The show is rated Y7. BUT, the writers wrote this show as if new viewers are supposed to already know these characters and what's going on with them, like they're targeting the older fans.
Supposedly, Rainbow wants new viewers. If that's the case, then why are they acting like the people watching should already know about these characters? For example, the Mitzi thing. Yeah, we know who Mitzi is. New viewers don't. The writers don't take any time to introduce Mitzi or tell us more about her. They even removed her first scene from the original where she was bullying or picking at Bloom for riding her bike around Gardenia. Keeping that scene in the reboot would tell new fans, "Oh yeah, she's the neighbor/school mate, she's always picking on Bloom." In this case, we're just dropped into Bloom's school, and Mitzi is just there and whines about her clothes getting dirty or whatever she said. It seems like the writers wanted to write a new story while taking elements from the precious stories. That's fine, when it's done right. If this is truly a reboot, you should be able to sit someone down to watch who's never seen the show and they should be able to learn about these characters by watching.
Speaking of Bloom's school, I hate how they handled multiple aspects of it. For one thing, I don't like that Mike and Vannessa just let Bloom go to Alfea. Yeah, they throw in the line of "Your admission papers turned into butterflies," but still. You're just gonna let Bloom go to a FAIRY school in another DIMENSION without any second thought? Okay. Also. When Bloom decides to leave Alfea because, evidently, we have to keep doing that, she goes home and immediately goes BACK TO SCHOOL. She looks in her locker at her schedule and just walks to class. Yes, I know this was a trap. My problem is, how long has Bloom been gone from regular school? Where do her teachers and classmates think she's been this whole time? She was just gonna walk into Chemistry class like she's been there this whole time? Sky has a line in that episode where he says something like "you've only been here for 3 days and already you're........" Can't remember the rest. So we know it's almost been a whole school week since she's been gone. Does she need a note to go back to school? I just don't get it.
I absolutely hate how they wrote one of my favorite characters, Tecna. In the origin mnal she struggled with emotions, yes. But in the reboot, she is sooooooo robotic. It's too much. She was never like that in the original except during the crystal labyrinth challenge. I also don't like how they wrote the Sky Bloom Diaspro triangle thing. I think it's really neat that fairies and witches go to school together. Seeing Diaspro here makes things feel a bit more tense when she's on screen next to Sky. My problem with that is apparently they're openly dating. So why are the writers having the other Winx tell Bloom to pursue Sky? They're encouraging her to talk to him, spend time with him, etc and asking what's going on between them. In the original, the engagement between Sky and Diaspro was hidden and she didn't go to the school so Sky wasn't exposed until later in the season. Here, Sky is actively dating Diaspro but trying to act single and Bloom is feeding into it while the Winx press her. I'm hoping in the 2nd half that they will just have Sky break up with Diaspro appropriately.
Anyways, these are my main thoughts I had while watching. What do yall think? How do you feel about these topics?
