Smoky Mountains fall foliage

Planning a last minute trip out to the Smokies to try to catch some fall foliage. Looking at predictions, it seems to vary wildly with some sites predicting early October and others all the way out to November. Any thoughts on when exactly we should plan our dates for the best chance of seeing some color? Thinking either the weekend of October 17 or October 24.
