The magic of Tailscale/Moonlight

Discussion

I know at this point most people are aware of Sunshine (Apollo) and Moonlight to stream game from the PC to the deck. Most people are probably also aware of Tailscale, which allow the same streaming from outside your household/network.

I knew it, from the beginning that I could do that, but there was always this question: do I really want to leave my PC running 24/7 for when I’m at work, travelling, etc.

Fast forward to yesterday, I have it a shot. I installed Tailscale on my W11 machine, ran the script to install on my deck and it was just super easy, I highly recommend, and tested it with success. The same thing remained though, how can I WoL my computer when out of town?! It happens now that I have a Plex server headless machine running 24/7. I figured I could send a wakeonlan signal to my PC to wake it from sleep and everything worked. I can even then out my PC back to sleep with RustDesk.

I just wanted to share my experience and to say I’m quite happy with the result and Tailscale was just so easy to install.

Summary:

  • Installed Tailscale on PC and Deck
  • Send a WoL signal from server to wake main gaming PC
  • Play/stream with Apollo/Moonlight
  • use RustDesk to out PC back to sleep
  • Voilà!
