Tension ties for balcony on log home? No sill plate.
While staining my new log home, I discovered a loft balcony needed a full rebuilding, and new ledger (old was sandwiching cedar siding, with no flashing, barely nailed into framing).
While I am not getting a permit to replace existing structure, I am doing my best to get her up to code. Siding cut away, plenty of membrane and metal flashing, and new ledger structurally screwed into the vertical 4x6 rough beam sitting on top of 9" log wall. All new framing utilizes simpson hangers.
My only real problem is whether tension ties would be of any use (or required) here? The ledger is attached with 5" 5/16 screws (20% more than required) to the 4x6 beam. If I install tension ties, they will go into the same beam as the screws. If I lower them 4" or so, I could screw them into the top course of logs.... but this is less than ideal for looks and water intrusion. Also, any through-hardware would be visible inside.
Suggestions? Personally, I think any problems significant enough to worry about the new balcony connection would also require that side of the house to have already collapsed. 🤔
