Transfer and accommodation in Washington DC

Giving Advice

Last time I landed at DCA with a big suitcase and a stroller, I decided not to mess around with multiple transfers right after the flight. I booked with DCAcar for pickup directly at the terminal, they had the child seat ready, and the driver dropped us at the hotel entrance. From DCA to the Smithsonian/Penn Quarter area it took about 15–20 minutes depending on traffic, while from IAD it was closer to 45–60 minutes because of the Dulles Access road. So choosing the airport really makes a difference on your first day’s schedule. If you catch a morning flight, you can still make it to the museums after lunch and save the evening for a walk around the Mall.

For accommodation I stayed in Penn Quarter, which was great for walking to the Mall and having quick metro access. On another trip I tried a hotel in Arlington near the Blue Line station, and the nightly rate was easier on the budget without losing convenience. For families with a stroller, sidewalks downtown are fine, Smithsonian entrances are easy, and planning your day by zones helps a lot: museum in the morning, break in the park midday, illuminated monuments in the evening. On rainy days, I switched to indoor museums and saved the outdoor tours for when the weather cleared. The airport transfer was the only moment where I felt a private car was the easiest choice to avoid dragging luggage around during rush hours.
