Why are so many great narrative indie games leaning into inevitable doom and existential futility lately?
I spent the weekend diving into a few atmospheric pixel art games, and I was struck by a common theme: the refusal of catharsis. For example, The Excavation of Hob's Barrow delivers folk horror where the character's tragic fate feels predestined. Even bolder is Tails Noir, which starts as a classic cyberpunk detective story, only to pivot hard into cosmic body horror and philosophical despair, intentionally subverting the standard hero's journey. Documented my exploration into these games here https://meetalikutty.com/weekend-in-narrative-driven-pixel-art-games-excavation-of-hobs-barrow-neon-hearts-city-tails-noir/
