Which game variant is popular? Which one should I try?

I’ve already played around 10 games with the base game + PoK on different platforms, and now I’d like to try a different variant (most probably will play on discord async). Which variant would you recommend? Which ones are the most popular? The first that comes to mind is the Alliance variant, but should I try Galactic Events or something else instead?
