Chamber gel

Reading generation x right now and chamber keeps calling people (or maybe just Paige?) gel. Is this a chamber thing or is this an accent thing? It's just a term for girl I'm guessing but is it pronounced like hair gel? Or a harder g like on gill? I don't know why this is throwing me as much as it is I normally can kinda just glaze past a term or two I don't know but this one has really got my attention for some reason. 😅
