Novel vs Donghua Translations.

In recent months I've made some time to read up some Novels of Donghua shows that I've already watched, not to compare the 2 mediums but to analyze the narrative strengths of both mediums towards different shows, and while for most shows I enjoyed both the Novel and the Donghua, there was something I noticed that caught my attention,

Translations differ for most shows, more specifically the characters abilities and techniques, like a character's one move would be called something else in the Novel, and then be called something slightly different in the Donghua, so I wondered...

Is this due to translation discrepancies between the 2 mediums or do studios alter some names for the sake of adapting, or is it just the case of incorrect translations?
